“I first went to Namibia when I was eighteen and fresh out of school.
We drove from Maun in Botswana into Namibia, the landscape shifting and opening up around us into something almost otherworldly. We were going on a Skelton Coast flying safari with Louw Schoeman.
Louw ran a flying safari along the Skeleton Coast, one of the most remote and dramatic stretches of wilderness on earth, and he knew every inch of it. From the air, Namibia reveals itself in a way that is almost impossible to describe — the sheer scale of it, the emptiness, the colours. The Atlantic crashing into the dunes. The colonies of seals far below, thousands of them, dotting the shoreline and the desert stretching in every direction as far as the eye could see.
And then we would land, climb into Louw’s old Land Rovers and head out into it — up and over dunes that seemed impossibly vast, into a landscape that felt entirely untouched. Each of his camps was a world of its own, remote and intimate, the kind of place that makes you feel very small and very lucky all at once.
Namibia got under my skin on that trip and has never really left. It is one of those destinations that simply has to be experienced — and a Skeleton Coast flying safari remains, to this day, one of the most extraordinary ways to do it.
